with Cecily Dodwell & Yolanda White.
This one day Workshop on Tuesday 1st August, 2017 will be a journey stepping out of our busy lives into a space for exploration, drawing on imagination.
The focus will NOT be on a finished Painting. We will begin with a series of quick intuitive explanatory Drawings then move on into colour.
This will be time of reflection and short Meditative Prayers.
Artists from the last two centuries broke with tradition freeing us from Imagery and creating a very different kind of contemplative Image or ‘Icon’. “A Painting is a door. It is a threshold” wrote Grace Hartigan. How is this Space handled and can we, the Artist and Viewer, move in and out of this Space?
Could the way in, be through Imagination? Paul Klee suggested it was through Nature whilst Diebenkorn thought it was achieved through calm beauty and one’s own imagination.
The Tools of our trade will be explored in ‘mark making drawings’, and paint application.
Diebenkorn’s late work gives a sense of inner space and light through glazes and thin washes of paint. Rowan Williams wrote about Light in The Dwelling of the Light. “Art is a collaboration between God and the Artist and the less the Artist does the better,” wrote Andre Gide in 1947.
This Day is about creativity in the broadest sense, so, be prepared to be challenged and to spread your Artist’s wings to discover new realms of creativity through prayer.
Please bring all your usual Drawing and Painting materials and a large size Sketching Paper.
Tea and Coffee are provided but please bring a packed lunch. The Workshop is open to all, regardless of experience but numbers are limited. Please note we shall be using the gallery room, upstairs, in the hall.
