NT Greek in a Week
Monday, 23 July, 2018 @ 09:30 - Saturday, 28 July, 2018 @ 15:30
Learning to Read the New Testament in Greek
The New Testament is both a very familiar, and at the same time, a very strange text. Distant from today’s English, both linguistically and culturally, the poetry and prose of the original texts speak of long vanished Empires, the abuse of power and the plight of the poor and disadvantaged. To encounter the text in its original language is to step into a world of priests and kings, wandering rabbis and provincial governors. An earlier time when an itinerant preacher and his disciples turned the world upside down.
The course works with New Testament text from the very start and over six days of intensive study introduces the student to the Koine Greek language and the Graeco-Roman culture from which the early church emerged. By the end of the week students are tackling extended narratives from gospels and letters. No prior knowledge of Greek, Latin or any other language is needed.
If you have ever wondered what lies behind the text of an English Bible, why different Bibles translate the text in different ways or wanted a better understanding of the Greek terms theologians love to toss about, then this course is for you.
Jon Riding has led a ground-breaking research team with the Bible Societies for more than 30 years and works with Bible translators all over the world. He brings a wealth of knowledge of scripture and translation experience to the course.
“…a challenging and fascinating course taught by a very knowledgeable and patient tutor.”“Far better than I could ever have expected. The whole week has been inspirational.”
“The depth of knowledge which Jon brings to this subject and his teaching style have really enriched my understanding of the New Testament. A joyful and liberating experience!”
This six-day intensive course includes evening teaching and a leisurely siesta after lunch.
