Better Together – Gary Streeter MP
Thursday, 16 June, 2016 @ 19:30 - 21:00£5
Gary Streeter MP
Gary Streeter MP is the Chair of Christians in Parliament and the Conservative Member of Parliament for South West Devon. He served as a junior minister in the Lord Chancellor’s Department under John Major from 1996 until the defeat of the Major Government in 1997, and was Shadow Secretary of State for International Development in the Shadow Cabinet of William Hague from 1998 until the new Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith returned him to the backbenches in 2001.
In 2013 Streeter referred to the “familiar glint in the swivelled eyes of the purists” within his own party in an article attacking the divisions caused by those activists who were calling for a referendum on EU membership. The remark followed allegations that senior members of the government had characterised Eurosceptic activists as “swivel-eyed loons”. Streeter argued that the result of party infighting over the issue would be “a Labour-led government bend[ing] the knee to Brussels”.
In a recent article on his blog he writes:
There are strong arguments and good people on either side. The entry of the charismatic Mayor of London into the fray on the leave campaign has electrified the debate. Good. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to settle this matter, and the arguments on both sides must be fully articulated. And the outcome is clearly going to too close to call.
We welcome him this evening to make the case for the UK remaining part of the European Union.Share:
