An Introduction to Biblical Hebrew
Reading the Old Testament in the language in which it was written is to open a window into a different world and times.
We are as a culture more than 3,000 years distant from the nomadic tribes who wandered the Middle East from amongst whom emerged a radical new understanding of Creation and the Creator.
Learning to read Biblical Hebrew is an adventure in difference. Ancient Hebrew is linguistically distant from European languages and employs structures and techniques to impart meeting which are foreign to English speakers. This three-day course introduces the student to Biblical Hebrew and lays the groundwork for further study.
The course works with fragments of scripture from the start and leads the student gently through the strangeness of Hebrew text into a growing understanding of how Old Testament narratives are constructed and how their writers thought of their world and expressed that understanding. Based on John Dobson’s excellent book “Learn Biblical Hebrew” the course is an ideal preparation for its follow-up course, Learning to Read Biblical Hebrew, or equally as a kick-start for further self-study using Dobson.
The three days are intensive but fun and bring the student through the early stages of learning a language which is radically different to most others and give us a glimpse of the world from which the great narratives of the Old Testament arose.
Jon Riding has led a ground-breaking research team with the Bible Societies for more than 30 years and works with Bible translators all over the world. He brings a wealth of knowledge of scripture and translation experience to the course.
“…a challenging and fascinating course taught by a very knowledgeable and patient tutor.”“Far better than I could ever have expected. The whole week has been inspirational.”
“The depth of knowledge which Jon brings to this subject and his teaching style have really enriched my understanding of the New Testament. A joyful and liberating experience!”
This six-day intensive course includes evening teaching and a leisurely siesta after lunch.
